Tanzania was actually created as a clipped compound of the names of two states, the two states unified to create the country including “Zanzibar and Tanganyika”. The name Zanzibar is derived from the word “zengi” which is the name for the local people (meaning “black”) and the word “barr” which means coast. Tanganyika is derived from “tanga” which is a Swahili word meaning sail and “nyika” means uninhabited plain, “wilderness” which led to the creation of the phrase “sail in the wilderness” and is often times perceived as a reference to Lake Tanganyika.
One of the uniqueness of Tanzania is that the people are not segregated by religion or tribe. Swahili is an Arab word that means “boundary” or “coast” However, the people living on the coast of East Africa and their language is now known as “Swahili”. The Swahili coast encompasses The Mystical Islands of Zanzibar and Tanzania’s mainland coastline which boasts 805 kilometers of palm-fringed pristine beaches. In Tanzania, you will enjoy a rich and unique culture, language and history of the people which is a blend of Arabic, Persian, African and Indian values.
